Facing Reality

Thank you to everyone who follows this blog or has looked at this blog at all. It means a lot that people would even check us out. I am officially announcing that I am accepting failure for my New Year resolution. It was a lot harder to blog daily that I had anticipated, but this has all been a fun process. If anything, I am grateful that this New Year’s goal has helped me get this blog started, and I don’t plan to end it any time soon. I will be posting posts when I feel like it instead of making this a daily task. This does mean I will be finishing the challenge sometime soon. I have a few posts that are most of the way done, they just need a few pictures and words.

Thanks again for reading this blog. Hopefully with more time during the school year, which I don’t understand why I have more free time during the school year, I will make more anime reviews.

Hope everyone is having a great summer,

Feiyon – Day 11: Do You Like Yuri And/Or Yaoi?

I love Yuri more than Yaoi, if you haven’t noticed, but I do enjoy both. My favorite yuri series is probably Sasameki Koto “Whisper Words” and my favorite yaoi is The World’s Greatest First Love.

It is somewhat hard to choose a favorite yuri series because most of the actual yuri series have sad endings and other anime series just hint at yuri moments. Also, I already wrote a review on Kannazuki no Miko, so I had to choose another series.

Anime Reivew

Anime: Sasameki Koto (Whispered Words)

Episode Count: 13 Episodes

Year: Oct 8 to Dec 31 2009

Genre: Romance, Comedy, Shoujo-ai, School, Yuri

You can watch it at: Anime1.com (Only Subbed)

Sumika Murasame is a diligent hardworking high school student who is the class rep for her class and the top choice as heir to her family’s dojo. These traits have gained her popularity in school and give her a ‘cool’ vibe. Unfortunately for Sumika, she feels traits hinder her trying to pursue her secret crush and best friend, Ushio Kazama. Ushio and Sumika have been friends for years, and Ushio has always been open about her love for cute girls to Sumika. Over the years, Sumika has had to witness her best friend swooning over a variety of cute girl and watch as her friend got burned by each one. Sumika tries desperately to become cute enough to make it onto Ushio’s cute-dar, and with the help from a lesbian couple, Sumika might finally get the chance she deserves.

I would suggest this to anyone who wants to try yuri, more like shoujo-ai, for the first time, to any shoujo-ai lover, and anyone who enjoys a sweet romance story. The story is cute and sweet as Sumika tries to capture the attention of her best friend. If you are looking for a clean romantic ending, I would suggest reading the manga instead. This anime gets cut short in my opinion. It might not have been popular enough to get continued, and I believe the manga was still coming out while the anime was made. Although the ending isn’t ideal, the anime was cute and funny, and it was worth watching from start to end.

Animation: 10/10

The character designs were really close to the manga which I liked. The animation style was soft with helped with the comedy and essence of the anime. There was also a lot of care put into the animation because all the movements of the character were clean. Even if the characters were in chibi form or normal, the movements of the characters always seemed smooth.

Characters: 10/10

This anime has a great mix of characters between lesbians and cross-dressing boys. Because they are all in high school, all the characters are still figuring out more about themselves in the anime. This is through experiences and listening to others. I loved every character in this series because they all had a some strange quirk.

The Main Cast

Main Characters:

Sumika Murasame:

Sumika Murasame has become popular in school because of her diligence in school and her above-average athletic ability. These traits cause other students in the school to call her “not cute”, but she has all the traits of a cool girl. Unfortunately, that’s the only thing Sumkia wishes to be. Sumkia largest secret is she has a crush on her best friend Ushio, but Ushio only likes cute girls (thus causing Sumika tremendous problems).

Sumiko Photo from Tinypic

Ushio Kazama:

Ushio Kazama is a beautiful blonde that has only had a love for girls. Her love for girls is so strong, she tried to apply to an all girl’s school, and her reasoning was because ‘girls are cute’. Because of her love, many other people avoided her. She was befriended Sumika soon after being isolated from everyone else. She enjoys being with Sumika because she can be herself.

Ushio gets excited easily when it comes to cute girls. She gets tunnel vision and only focuses on that one girl. Sumika comments that Ushio has had many crushes in the past, and every time has been rejected. It takes her a while to realize that she has feelings for Sumika. Unlike the other girls she has crushed on, Ushio takes her time trying to confess her love to Sumika.

sdkjfldkjfd sdjfdklfs Photo from Deviant Art

Ushio Kazama
Photo from Deviant Art

Plot: 8/10

The main plot of the anime is Sumika trying to get Ushio to notice her feelings. Most of the anime is meeting new characters and the character’s interactions. The ending of the anime is decent. It has an open ending that is good for the views, but still leaves the viewers hanging. [Definitely read the manga if you want more]

Opening/Ending: 5/10

The opening and ending songs were decent. They aren’t to memorable, and I wouldn’t really want to listen to them in my free time.

How well the anime fits the main genre(s) (Romcom/Shoujo-ai): 10/10

This is a great mix of romance, comedy, and shoujo-ai. The romance isn’t a prominent part though because the two girl’s aren’t together. The comedy is a focus on Sumika’s failed love attempts and characters teasing each other. The shoujo-ai in this anime is always present. It isn’t hidden in subtext, but there is only one true lesbian couple.

Overall Opinion: 43/50

This is an anime that I could watch countless time, but only a certain episodes. I loved the comedy between Sumika trying to fit Ushio’s love preferences, but Ushio just doesn’t realize that Sumika loves her. I read the manga after watching the anime because I wanted to see more than what the anime gave, and I did like how closely the anime followed the manga.

Feiyon – Day 10: Anime that Changed You

As of April 19, I just finished the series Shigatsu Wa Kimi No Uso, also known as “Your Lie in April”. This anime helped me realize that music is more than just notes on a page. There is a distinct difference between playing a song, and being part of the song you are playing. It was easy to connect to the show because one of the characters plays violin. The freedom in which she plays the violin is exhilarating. I hope that someday I could put as much emotion as Kaori does into her playing.

Anime Review

Anime: Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Your Lie in April)

Episode Count: 22 Episodes

Year: October 2014 to March 2015

Genre: Drama, Music, Romance, School, Shounen

You can watch it at: Crunchyroll

The main character Kousei Arima is a prodigy at playing the piano. At a very young age, he played in multiple piano competitions and won. After his mother died, so did Kousei’s ability to hear himself play the piano. Because of this disability, Kousei vanished from the piano world and took up musical pass times to try and replace the piano. One day, his childhood friend, Tsubaki Sawabe, tells Kousei he is going to help their other childhood friend, Ryouta Watari, hook up with a girl. Kousei gets to the meeting point a bit early and hears music playing off in the distance. Following the sound, he meets the girl that will change music for him forever.

I would highly recommend this anime to anyone who enjoys music, romance, drama, or any mix of these genres. The build up of the character and the music in this anime was magnificent. Even if you don’t understand music that well, there is commentary and visual that help the views understand what is happening.

Animation: 11/10

The animation in this series was gorgeous. There is a lot of detail and work done into every scene. I loved the way they made the backgrounds. The attention to detail was amazing. The characters themselves moved smoothly. Between the playing and every day life, the animation of the characters was carefully done too. This anime had great animation every episode from start to finish.

Characters: 10/10

All the characters in this series were different. This difference could be seen by them all headed towards the same goal, but reaching those goals in different ways. It was amusing in the end how many characters Arima affected without realizing it. It was also interesting how each character interpreted their encounter with Arima differently and how that shaped who they were later in the series. The switch between the childhood and current time helped build the characters throughout the show, and the creators did a good job of mixing these moments together.

Main Characters:

Arima Photo from Pinimg

Arima Kousei
Photo from Pinimg

Arima Kousei:

Arima Kousei is a piano prodigy known throughout the music community. When his mother realized that he had potential with piano, she started pushing him to practice, and Arima became like a machine playing music. He played the sheet musicperfectly, following every instruction the composer wrote. His mother soon became terminally ill, and Arima believed that if he played piano well enough that he could cure her. Arima’s mother continued to push him, and after one competition, Arima couldn’t handle the pressure anymore. He lashed out at his mother, and she soon died after. This encounter hurt Arima psychologically. Not only was Arima not able to resolve that fight with his mother, but he also wasn’t able to save her with his music. The haunting of his mother affected his playing and soon Arima was incapable of hearing himself play piano, if he played for longer than a few seconds.

Arima passed the next few years outside of the music community because of his disability. Pressured by his friend Tsubaki, Arima is forced to go on a group outing with Tsubaki’s friend, Watari, and Tsubaki to try and hook up Tsubaki’s friend with Watari. Arima goes early to the meet up and hears music in the distance. He ends up meeting Tsubaki’s friend, Kaori, early. Kaori helps Arima find music again in his life. She tricks him into being her accompanist, because she plays violin, and later has him play in competitions. Throughout this journey, Arima is able to get over the loss of his mother, and starts to put feeling back into his robotic music.

Kaori Photo from ytimg

Kaori Miyazono:

Kaori Miyazono is a beautiful talented musician. Her specialty is the violin, but she can play a few more instruments too. Kaori joins the three child-hood friends by telling Tsubaki that she has a crush on Watari. The two hit it off quickly.

The first day Watari, Arima, and Tsubaki meet Kaori, they watch her play in a violin competition. Kaori gets a mixed response at the competition because of her creative playing. Kaori doesn’t follow the sheet music, which is the only way judges can give a comparative score between musicians. Instead, Kaori follows what she believes how the music would want her to play. The audience loves her performance, but the head judges finds her playing to be an absolute disgrace to music. Kaori ends up going to the next round because of popular audience vote, and chooses Arima to be her new accompanist. This is the start of her pushing Arima to enter back into the music world, but not as the robot he has trained to be. She wants Arima to play how he wants the music to sound for himself.

It is later discovered that Kaori has a terminal illness, and this causes Arima some pain because he starts drawing parallels between Kaori and his mother. Kaori’s next few months are difficult, but she continues to push Arima back into doing what he loves.

T Photo from Anime-evo

Tsubaki Sawabe
Photo from Anime-evo

Tsubaki Sawabe:

Tsubaki Sawabe is childhood friend and next door neighbor of Arima. She has been by his side since childhood and has always worried about him. Tsubaki is torn between loving and hating music because watching Arima play piano brings her joy, but piano is also the thing that draws the two apart.

Tsubaki knew as a child that Arima was being physically abused by her mother, but probably didn’t understand at that age. She constantly tried to get Arima to have fun as a child by jumping off bridges or playing sports. After Arima had given up piano, she tried to get him back into playing piano but to no avail.

Later in the series, Tsubaki understands that Kaori has become a positive influence on Arima, but she becomes jealous by the way Kaori can help Arima in ways she can’t, because she isn’t a musician.

Tsubaki definitely has feeling for Arima throughout the whole show, but she plays them off by claiming he is like a little brother. These feelings become more clear after Tsubaki tries dating a sempai that she had a crush on, and only wanting to go back to Arima.

K Photo from Pinimg

Ryouta Watari
Photo from Pinimg

Ryouta Watari:

Ryouta Watari is Arima and Tsubaki’s childhood friend. He is the captain of the boys soccer team and is popular with many girls because of his charm and good looks. He is known for going out with many girls at one time. He is a smooth talker, but inside her gets excited like a child.

Ryouta helps Arima when he can, but the competition of love interest between the two is where some messy things occur. Ryouta knows that he is cooler than Arima, but he still finds things about himself that he with he could do like Arima.

Plot: 10/10

I believe the anime has a smooth plot. It really draws out the plot at the right tempo by giving a lot of character information and background information because jumping through each event. The mix might feel a bit slow to some, but I think it helps the viewers feel closer to the characters and story being told.

Opening/Ending: 8/10

I liked the first ending and the second opening better than the seconding ending and first opening. The two that I liked I would probably listen to in my free time. The latter two are songs that I would add to an anime playlist, but probably forget what anime they came from. They were all good songs, but only a few I would add to my favorites list.

How well the anime fits the main genre(s) (Drama/Music): 10/10

If I didn’t make it clear before, this anime is a terrific mix of drama and music. The music helps bring out the drama within this show. The way the story progresses, you can’t help but feel connected to each character. The creators didn’t hold back on the ending either and let that hit the viewers right in the face.

Overall Opinion: 49/50

I honestly didn’t know what I was getting into when I started this anime. I feel a bit of regret about not keeping up with this anime as it came out every week. It has quickly jumped to being my second favorite anime and favorite anime drama, although I am a huge sucker for music anime. I loved how intertwined all the characters were in the end of the anime. I also loved the title of the anime. SPOILER ALERT: (Highlight next section to read) [I loved the whole title of the anime being based off the lie Kaori told Tsubaki, in April. Although it was sad to see Kaori die, especially before Arima and her could play again, it was nice that the creators didn’t hold back on the ending and bring her back.]

Feiyon – Day 9: Favorite Villain or Antagonist

My favorite antagonist is Shinobu Wakamiya from the anime Chihayafuru. I enjoy her character’s love for Snow-maru. She is socially awkward which makes her adorable. Similar to the main character, Chihaya, she is cute but has no fashion sense. It was hard to choose a villain or antagonist that I liked from an anime because usually the villians I see in anime are created to be unlikable.

Character Review

Character: Shinobu Wakamiya

Anime: Chihayafuru

Manga: Chihayafuru

Voice Actress/CV: Mihoko Nakamichi

Shinobu Wakamiya is the reigning queen of the game karuta in the Chihayafuru series. She is the youngest queen in history and is left-handed. She has a deep connection to every poem in the game and considers each card her friend. Usually when she plays an opponent, she completely dominates the game to the point the opponent stops trying. This causes Shinobu to feel she is playing the game alone.

Warning! If you read further than this, there could be spoilers.

Appearance: 10/10

I believe Shinobu’s appearance perfectly fits her character in the anime. She has an air of coolness about her because of her hardened expressions and black hair. While holding the elegance of royalty. Her hair only reaches to about the end of her neck and her eyes are black. She is fit, for most of the anime and usually dresses in simple clothes.

Personality: 10/10

Shinobu usually has a sweet mannerism while underhandedly criticizing other people. She has a signature smile she gives to instil fear into her opponents before obliterating them.  I personally find it cute that she has a deep connection with all the poems and that she was obsessed with the character Snowmaru. At some points, Shinobu can loses control of her emotions and lets her darker inner emotions emerge. This can be a scary experience to anyone in the vicinity.

How well the character’s CV fits the character: 10/10

The voice actress Mihoko Nakamichi did a good job at voicing Shinobu. She did a good job at making Shinobu’s character sounding cold and suspicious. Also when Shinobu looses her cool, she is good at playing that side of Shinobu too.

Overall Thoughts: 30/30

I thought that Shinobu’s character was a good contrast to Chihaya’s character. Not only as a rival, but as a person the two are similar yet totally different. I enjoy that Shinobu helps Chihaya move forward as a player, but Shinobu also continues to grow stronger as time passes. Shinobu is a fun character in the Chihayafuru series because she is reserved, odd, and cute, and I hope she continues to make appearances throughout the series.

Feiyon – Day 8: What Crossover Would You Like to See?

The anime crossover I would enjoy watching is a mix of the characters from Girl’s Bravo and Heaven’s Lost Property. It would be so funny to watch Tomoki drag Yukinari around to the girl’s locker room and Yukinari breaking out with hives. Tomoki and Kazuharu would be brothers in arms. Kazuharu would probably want an angeloid of his own too. I think the anime would just be a great mix of ecchi and comedy between these two casts.

Girls Bravo Girls
Girls from left to right (Risa Fukuyama, Miharu Sena Kanak, Kirie Kojima, Koyomi Hara Nanaka)

Anime: Girls Bravo

Episode Count: 11 Episodes

Year: July – Sept 2004

Genre: Comedy, Ecchi, Fantasy, Romance, School Harem

You can watch it at: Hulu or Netflix ( English Subbed and Dubbed )

The anime focuses on a boy named Yukinari Sasaki. Because Yukinari has been bullied by girls for a long time, he became allergic to girls. Coming into contact with a girl causes Yukinari to break out in hives. One day, while taking a bath, Yukinari suddenly finds himself in a strange new world filled with women. On this planet, there are almost no men, so they all chase after Yukinari. One of the girls is named Miharu, and she isn’t like the other girls. Miharu is the only girl that Yukinari can touch without getting an allergic reaction. Miharu comes back to Earth with Yukinari and she quickly accumulates to the new environment.

I would recommend this anime to anyone who enjoys a good mix of ecchi, romance, comedy, and harem. Although the graphics are a bit old, the comedy is still fresh and the character make the anime amazing.

Animation: 8/10

Because the anime came out in 2004, the animation style is a bit outdated. The animation is still smooth throughout the series.

Characters: 10/10

In these types of shows, the characters are what make the anime worth watching or not. I enjoyed every character in this series. From the perverted suave rich-boy, Kazuharu, to the seal-dog-pet thing, Ebi, the mix of characters made the anime memorable.

Main Characters:

Yukinari Sasaki:

Yukinari Saski Photo from Blogspot

Yukinari Sasaki
Photo from Blogspot

Yukinari Sasaki is smaller than average, and this caused him to get bullied by girls as a child. This instilled a fear of women into Yukinari, and now whenever a woman touches him, Yukinari breaks out in hives. Yukinari is a sweet boy, but he is also a lucky pervert. He usually finds himself in compromising situations, which usually ends in Yukinari being covered in hives.

Miharu Sena Kanaka:

Miharu d Photo from Madman

Miharu Sena Kanaka
Photo from Madman

Miharu Sena Kanaka is an alien from the planet Seiren. She is the only girl that Yukinari can touch without getting hives, and this drives her to want to help Yukinari get over his fear and allergy of women. Miharu is constantly curious about the new world around her, but she is also quite dense to what happens around her too.

Kirie Kojima:

Kirie d Photo from Empty Blue It

Kirie Kojima
Photo from Empty Blue It

Kirie Kojima is Yukinari’s childhood friend and is known from having one of the largest pair of breasts in the anime. She tries to help Yukinari with his problem, but she usually gets distracted by the school’s pervert Kazuharu Fukuyama. She is a sweet and caring girl, but when it comes to Fukuyama, she usually resorts to violence.

Kazuharu Fukuyama:

Kazuharu Fukuyama Photo from WordPress

Kazuharu Fukuyama is the school’s most well-known pervert. He is able to capture many into his bed, probably because he is filthy rich, but he seems to want all the girls that hang around Yukinari. Opposite of Yukinari, Kazuharu gets covered in hives if he touches men. Kazuharu constantly tries to take the girls from Yukinari with many different schemes, but ultimately just joins the crew on their adventures.

Plot: 6/10

This anime doesn’t really have a clear plot because the ultimate goal is to cure Yukinari of his ailment. Mostly what happens throughout the series is many romantic feels develop between the characters, but the main ships remain strong during the entire show.

Opening/Ending: 6/10

The opening and endings of this anime were decent. The older style of Japanese pop music can be heard in these songs. They are not songs that I would look up to listen to, and I would probably skip them when re-watching the anime.

How well the anime fits the main genre(s) (Romcom/Ecchi/Harem): 10/10

This anime has a good mix of these different genres. It defiantly has romantic comedy because of all the emotions runing between the characters. The comedy helps keep the romances light in the series too. There is ecchi all over this series. This is a boob-grabs, costume majhong, tentacles, and more. To top it all off, the series is also slightly a harem. Although Miharu doesn’t have much competition, because Yukinari only seems to like her, many other girls have feelings for Yukinari too.

Overall Opinion: 40/50

I really enjoyed this show the first time I watched it. I thought all the comedy was funny and all the characters were great as well. It is a show that I wouldn’t mind re-watching if I had the time, but I probably wouldn’t make it my first re-watch choice.

Feiyon – Day 7: Your Anime Crush

My favorite anime crush is Usui Takumi from Kaichou wa Maid-sama. He is fun to watch as he teases Misaka, but he also has a very sweet side to him. He is also intellegent and attractive, so what’s not to like.

Character Review

Character: Usui Takumi

Anime: Kaichou wa Maid-sama!

Manga: Kaichou wa Maid-sama!

Voice Actress/CV: Japanese: Okamoto Nobuhiko/ English: David Matranga

Usui Takaumi is the main male love interest in the Kaichou wa Maid-sama! series. He is known for being well liked by the male and female population at the school. He is frequently asked out by many of the females and is the chosen leader for the male population. Usui is great at anything he tries. He finds the most joy in teasing Misaka, but he is always there to help her when necessary.

Warning! If you read further than this, there could be spoilers.

Appearance: 11/10

Photo from Fanpop

Photo from Fanpop

Usui Takami is the most attractive anime character that I’ve seen. He is tall and physically fit. The way his hair is styled and his face is drawn makes him even more attractive. He as many forms of attractiveness: hot, cool, and cute.

Photo from Fanpop

Personality: 10/10

Usui has a mix of personalities he uses depending on the situation. He is usually really cold to people he doesn’t care about. He always seems to tease Misaka or showing her affection. Misaka is usually the only person that he shows his emotions to. Usui is great at reading situations and knows when he has to behave, but Misaka usually helps him break habit.

How well the character’s CV fits the character: 10/10

I don’t think that everyone would be able to give the smooth edge to Usui’s voice. I’ve only heard Usui’s Japanese voice actor and I think that he did a great job at voicing Usui. The way that he switched between Usui’s different personalities made the character more attractive.

Overall Thoughts: 31/30

The fact that Kaichou wa Maid-sama! was one of the first anime I have seen and Usui remains my anime crush proves that he is an important character to me. The mix of Usui’s personality and physical appearance makes Usui an amazing character. I really like that Usui is intelligent and athletic. The teasing between Usui and Misaka is terrific, making Usui an even better character.

Aesm – Day 6: Anime You Want To Watch But Haven’t

I asked Feiyon to make a review for Campione for me for today’s question.
Also, now that I’m back from the passover celebration I went to I will be catching up on the days I missed. I’m hoping to catch up on everything by midnight (here) tomorrow night (5 AM WordPress time).

Anime: Campione!

Episode Count: 13

Year: July – Sept 2012

Genre: Action, Harem, Magic, Fantasy, Ecchi, Romance, Comedy

You can watch it at:

Crunchyroll and Hulu with Japanese subs

Justdubs with English dub

Godou Kusanagi is an average human until he gets in the middle of fight between gods.

While Godou is traveling to return a stone tablet from his grandfather, he runs into a few problems. He meets a feisty blonde who doesn’t want him to have the tablet. Later he uses the tablet to stop the gods from fighting and accidentally absorbs one of the god’s powers. Godou is now entrusted with keeping the gods from destroying the world, with the help of many female worshipers from many different religions.

This is one of the first anime that I have watched as a simulcast. I enjoyed the anime, but it isn’t anything special. There are many good ecchi and battle scenes. The harem is strong in this anime too. It was interesting how the anime mixed in Greek mythology into the anime. It is a good watch for anyone who likes ecchi, harems, and action.

Animation: 8.5/10

The animation in this series was a bit better than average. The characters were nicely drawn and the battles were nicely animated. All the characters have good character designs.

Characters: 8.5/10

All the characters in the harem are all pretty average. I liked how they perceived all the characters and had all the characters bounce off each other. It was a fun mix of characters, but all the characters were stereotypical.

Main Characters:

Godou Kusanagi:

Screenshot from Crunchyroll

Godou Kusanagi – Screenshot from Crunchyroll

Godou Kursanagi is an average high school student until he stops a god battle and becomes a demi-god. He is like most boys and is interested in women, but easily embarrassed when women pursue him. He is nice and willing to help his friends when they are in need. He is also protective of his friends. Godou is always willing to find a solution that will be the best benefit to everyone involved.

Erica Blandelli:

Erica B d

Erica Blandelli is a member of the Copper Black Cross. She can be aggressive when first meeting people, but warms up to them if they find them important. She is Italian and works mainly in Milan, Italy. She is the closest female to Godou and isn’t worried about sharing him with others as long as he considers her his number one. Erica is very knowlegable and is able to help Godou a lot during fights. She uses a magical sword to battle. Erica enjoys teasing Godou in sensual ways which includes inside and outside the bedroom.

Yuri Mariya:

Yuri Mariya Photo from Wikia

Yuri Mariya

Yuri Mariya is a part of the Japanese Magician Society. She has a high level of spiritual power that allows her to sense other spiritual beings. She is gentle and sweet, but she can be strict when it comes to inappropriate behavior. She claims to stay around Godou because he is the campione and the fix his behavior, but her true intentions are always obvious.

Plot: 9/10

The plot of the anime was interesting. It was fun watching the main character fight against different gods or demi-gods. The battles had a lot of action, but also a good amount of ecchi. The plot was the part of the anime that made it more memorable and different that most ecchi, harem, action anime.

Opening/Ending: 9/10

I enjoyed the opening and ending of Campione! I liked the style that the producers choose for the songs. This songs can get boring after listening to them for a while, so it lost a point in this category.

How well the anime fits the main genre(s) (Action/Harem/Romcom): 10/10

This anime fit within these genres perfectly. It did a good job of mixing the three together though. There isn’t any boring moment. The anime does a good job of keeping the audience entertained taking turns between these genres.

Overall Opinion: 46/50

The anime was better than most action, harem, romcom that I’ve seen. I really enjoyed the mix of Greek mythology into the show. It is a show I would watch again and would suggest to other that like these types of shows.

Feiyon – Day 5: Anime You’re Ashamed You Enjoyed

The one anime that I am ashamed of enjoying the most is The World’s Greatest First Love. I really liked all the characters and the creator did a great job on the romantic comedy. I don’t have anything against yuri or yaoi, but I usually go more for yuri. Although I choose this show because it is a yaoi, I am more ashamed that I enjoyed this show so much. I could hardly wait to watch the new episode as it came out each week. This would be a yaoi that I would suggest for anyone who enjoys this genre or to someone who hasn’t seen a yaoi before.

Anime Review

Ritsu is the one falling and Takano is catching him Picture is from DVD cover

Anime: Sekaiichi Hatsukoi (The World’s Greatest First Love)

Episode Count: 12

Year: April – June 2011

Genre: Yaoi, Romance, Comedy, Shounen-ai

You can watch it at: Crunchyroll

The anime follows many different couples as they fall in love with each other over time. Ritsu Onodere and Masamune Takano are the main two character, and couple, that the anime follows. Ritsu is the son of a rich publisher, so to avoid riding on his father’s tail-feathers, he decides to go into publishing in another company besides his fathers. He ends up editing manga, but he would rather edit literature. He soon realizes that his high school boyfriend, whom he didn’t have a clean break from, is now his boss at his new job. Ritsu, who has abandoned love, must make his way toward the top of the industry while trying to figure out his lingering feelings for Masamune.

I would defiantly recommend this anime to any yaoi or shounen-ai fan. I would also suggest this anime to anyone who is willing to try yaoi or shounen-ai for the first time. This anime is made by the same creator as Junjo Romantica, which is a well known yaoi anime. I like this one more because there is more emotional drama than physical drama. Most of the problems between the characters are ‘who said what’ and ‘they did what’ instead of physical dominance shown between two males. I will admit there is still some of that in this anime, but it didn’t feel as prominent or memorable compared to Junjo Romantica.

Animation: 10/10

The animation though out the series is very clean and beautifully presented. There are many scenes where the characters switch between being in normal form and chibi form, but both have great care in how they are presented.

Characters: 10/10

All the characters in the show had fun personalities, and it was fun to watch characters in one love story work their way into other love stories in the series.

Main Characters:

Ritsu Onodere:

Ritsu Onodere is the son and heir of a large publishing company. To prove himself as a publisher, he wanted to start as a publisher in other businesses than his father’s. During high school, he fell in love with his sempai, Masamune Takano, and the two had a short relationship, until a misunderstanding happened. After being heartbroken, he swore off falling in love again. Ritsu is a tsundere character. He doesn’t easily admit what he is truly feeling and attempts to reject or hide these feelings.

Masamune Takano:

Masamune Takano is the new head of the manga editorial department. He is known for being capable because he has made the department successful since he became the head. He is a cool and collected person most of the time, but when he enjoys teasing Ritsu when he gets the chance, making him the seme in the relationship. He is pretty open about his feelings, but the high school romance he had still affects him currently.

Plot: 9/10

The romantic plots between each couple were magnificently played out throughout the series. All the emotional tension between each couple kept the viewer on their toes. The reason why I docked a few points in this section is due to the difficulty of keeping each story straight. It isn’t easy to understand what is happening in each relationship or to understand which couple you are following. There are only three different couples in the anime, but it feels a bit jumbled sometimes if you’re not paying attention.

Opening/Ending: 8/10

The opening and ending of the anime are not songs that I usually listen to. When I re-listened to the songs, I enjoyed the songs, but they are not songs I would go out of my way to find. I am also a bit biased on the music I listen to. I tend to lean towards female singers than males. This didn’t affect the grade I gave this section, but you might enjoy the opening and ending more if you prefer male Japanese singers.

How well the anime fits the main genre(s) (Yaoi/Romcom): 10/10

I thought this anime was a great mix of yaoi, romance, and comedy. Each couple had its own quirks. The relationships had many comedic moments, but it was clear that each couple was totally devoted and in love with their partner.

Overall Opinion: 47/50

I am a sucker for sloppy romantic drama, so I really liked watching all the couples struggle to get together. There were not dull moments that I can remember, and every episode seem to end just when it was getting somewhere. I really enjoyed this anime, and I would definitely re-watch it if I had time.

Feiyon – Day 4: Which Anime Character Would You Want to be Your Best Friend

It was hard to choose which anime character I would want as my best friend. After searching through my anime list, I decided on Kuro Matsumi, Karen Kujo, and Chiya Ujimatsu. I had wanted to choose Chiya in the end, but I soon realized that I already did a character review on her. My final decision on which anime character I would want to be my best friend is Kuro Matsumi from Saki Achiga-hen: Episode of Side-A. I like how loyal she is and she seems like a fun person. It would be extremely fun to learn how to play majhong from her. I also think her special majhong power. Kuro is a fun character and I would love to have her be one of my close friends.

Voice Actress/CV: Kana Hanazawa

Kuro Matsumi is a second-year high school student at Achiga Girl’s academy. She has been playing majhong with her friends since she was in elementary school, but eventually everyone stopped coming once middle school came around. Kuro continued to clean the majhong room while the other girls stopped coming waiting for her to return. Kuro is a sweet girl who is always looking out for her friends. She has a close relationship with her sister Yuu. Kuro works hard to help her friends and loves to play majhong with them.

Warning! If you read further than this, there could be spoilers.

Appearance: 10/10

Kuro has long dark purple hair that flows down her back. Her eyes are the same shade as her hair. She has a larger bust than most characters in the show, but she is still thin. She has soft facial features that makes her character seem sweet and gentle.

Personality: 10/10

I really liked Kuro’s loyalty to the club. She waited every single day for everyone to return, and although it took years, everyone eventually came back. Kuro is sweet and kind. She cares a lot about her other club members and tries to make sure everyone is happy.

How well the character’s CV fits the character: 10/10

I believe Kana Hanazawa did a great job voicing Kuro. Two of the more recognizable characters that I’ve heard Kana play are Shiori, the quiet librarian girl in Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai (The World God Only Knows) and Onodere, the second main love interest in the new anime Nisekoi. In both roles, Kana voices soft and sweet characters, like Kuro, and did a great job at bringing out all three of these characters.

Overall Thoughts: 30/30

Kuro is my favorite girl from the entire Saki franchise. I really like her as a character, but I also like her “majhong skill”. She is known as The Dragon Lord because all the dora come to her.(Dora is short for dragon, so that is why she is called The Dragon Lord.) This is a blessing, but also a curse because she is not able to discard a dora. If she discards dora, she doesn’t get any dora for a long period of time. I’m hoping the Saki series gets another season, so I can finally see who wins the national tournament. I know that rooting for Achiga’s team will probably be in vain, but I have to give my support to Kuro.
